Dr. Fields (CM, MA, MD, FRCPC, FACP) was appointed as Board Chair of the Health Quality Council of Alberta in 2012.
Dr. Fields is Professor Emeritus, Oncology, at the University of Alberta. His career includes work at Alberta Health Services, where he was responsible for Alberta’s tertiary and associate cancer centres, community oncology programs and cancer research programs. In his clinical practice at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, he specialized in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal cancers.
Dr. Fields has held various administrative positions in Alberta’s cancer system, including Director of the Cross Cancer Institute and Vice President, Medical Affairs & Community Oncology of the Alberta Cancer Board. Within the University of Alberta, he was Director, interdepartmental Division of Oncology, and served as Acting Chair at the inception of the Department of Oncology.
Dr. Fields has had extensive previous governance experience within national organizations in the public and the voluntary sectors, including service on the boards of the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies, the former National Cancer Institute of Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance. He is a past president of the National Cancer Institute of Canada and of the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists, and a past Governor (Alberta Region) of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Fields’ work has been recognized through several awards, including an honorary doctorate of Athabasca University, the Distinguished Alumni Award of the University of Alberta, and the R.M. Taylor Medal and Award of the Canadian Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute of Canada. He was named one of Alberta’s 100 Physicians of the Century in 2005; is a recipient of the inaugural Minister’s Award for Outstanding Medical Services from Alberta Health; and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2012.
